Certain medication can cause problems with hearing loss; drugs that can affect the hearing are called ototoxic, they can also affect the balance and have been known to cause tinnitus. However it is important that you never stop taking any medication that has been prescribed by your doctor for a medical problem without first consulting your doctor. Medications that can cause problems with the hearing are:

  • Drugs for preventing malaria.
  • Certain antibiotics called aminoglycosides.
  • Cytotoxic drugs which are usually found in medication to treat cancer.
  • Diuretics.
  • Aspirin.
