Hearing loss medication & treatmentDeafness & hearing loss guideCertain medication can cause problems with hearing loss; drugs that can affect the hearing are called ototoxic, they can also affect the balance and have been known to cause tinnitus. However it is important that you never stop taking any medication that has been prescribed by your doctor for a medical problem without first consulting your doctor. Medications that can cause problems with the hearing are: * Drugs for preventing malaria. * Certain antibiotics called aminoglycosides. * Cytotoxic drugs which are usually found in medication to treat cancer. * Diuretics. * Aspirin. How do ototoxic drugs affect the hearing? Ototoxic drugs affect the hearing by causing damage to the hair cells in the cochlea which is in the inner ear, they can also cause problems with the auditory nerve, the auditory nerve carries the sounds to our brain from the cochlea. This hearing loss is called sensorineural and is usually permanent hearing loss although some drugs only cause temporary hearing loss or problems with the balance and tinnitus. The side effects of anti-malaria drugs Anti-malaria drugs can have side effects although this is usually more when you actually have malaria and have to take large doses, hearing problems caused by anti-malaria drugs is usually only temporary. Common side effects of anti-malaria drugs are: * Tinnitus. * Headaches. * Dizziness. * Nausea. * Anxiety. * Sleep problems. The side effects of Antibiotics Antibiotics that can cause problems with the hearing are usually those that are given to treat serious diseases such as tuberculoses and are occasionally given when an infection doesn't respond to other antibiotics. The most common side effects of antibiotics are hearing loss and tinnitus, side effects however usually only occur when antibiotics are taken in large doses. The side effects of cytotoxic drugs The most common use of these drugs is treatment for cancer and the most common side effects of taking them are difficulty in hearing, tinnitus and problems with the balance. Diuretics Diuretics are given to help with fluid build up in the tissues, they are also sometimes given to help with high blood pressure and the common side effects are hearing loss and problems with the balance. The side effects of aspirin Aspirin is a drug which is commonly used for pain and when taken in the correct doses causes no problem with the hearing, however when taken in large quantities aspirin can cause problems such as: * Dizziness. * Tinnitus. * Sleep problems. * Nausea. * Profuse sweating. If you are taking any of the above medication then don't stop taking it without the advice of your doctor, if you are suffering from problems with your hearing which you didn't before taking the medication then you should ask your doctors advice about it. |
